The world famous Galapagos Islands are the fourth region of Ecuador. They are located about 1,000 kilometers off the Ecuadorian coast. The combination of the tropical zone on the coast, the Andes and the equator is the reason for the diversity in nature and the different climate in such a small land area. Quito is the capital of Ecuador and is located 20 km south of the equator, at about 2,850 m above sea level. Numerous mountains and volcanoes surround Quito such as the Ruco and Guagua Pichincha volcanoes. Quito is located on the foundations of the Inca Empire, and the Quiteños (residents of Quito) take pride in having the largest historical center in Latin America, declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. The colonial old quarter has many 16th and 17th century churches and other buildings that combine architectural styles of Indigenous, European and Moros (Mudejar style). The food of Quito has influences from the regions of the Andes and Europe, such as “El Locro de Papas” a potato soup with cheese and avocado.

WEATHER In Otavalo, the wet season is overcast, the dry season is partly cloudy, and it is comfortable year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 11°F to 21°F and is rarely below 8°F or above 23°F.
El Panecillo is a monument located on the top of a hill in the middle of Quito. The Incas have called the hill “Schungoloma”, which means “heart hill” in their language. In 1976, the Spanish artist Agustín de la Herrán Matorras was commissioned by the religious order of the Oblates to build a 45-meter-tall stone monument of a Madonna which was assembled on a high pedestal on the top of Panecillo. Called “Virgin of El Panecillo”, it is made of seven thousand pieces of aluminum.
Otavalo is the most popular tourist destination in northern Ecuador. The indigenous city is located 110 km north of Quito, at an altitude of 2,500 meters above sea level. It is best known for the colorful market in the “Plaza de los Ponchos”. The three surrounding volcanoes Imbabura (4,621m), Cotacahi (4,935m) and Fuya Fuya (4,263m) offer a beautiful panorama in which the city is embedded. The landscape around Otavalo is characterized by numerous lakes, some of which are in craters. Every year in September, the city celebrates the Fiesta del Yamor, an ancient Inca ritual where the sun god is honored. The city of Otavalo is an example of a typical South American Andean city.

The famous indigenous market takes place in the Plaza de Ponchos, right in the city center. Time and again, we read that Otavalo is the largest local market in Ecuador. Other sources even say that it is the largest market of its kind in South America. The marketplace is open every day, but on Saturdays, the entire city center is transformed into a huge, colorful market zone, where goods of all sorts are offered. The ubiquitous network of tourists from all over the world today has made Otavalo one of the wealthiest areas in Ecuador.
